“The slogan and logo are designed to underscore the outstanding natural beauty of the Maldives, which tourists from all segments of the market consistently rate as one of their main reasons for visiting the country”, said MMPRC Chairperson Thoyyib Mohamed.

David Keen, CEO of QUO Keen said: “We have created a brand that stands for the Maldivian people, for tourism and for all of Maldivian industry. The slogan “Always Natural” talks to the wonderful character of the people of the Maldives, to sustainability and to the ultimate tourism experience. The logo has been hand-crafted to express the natural elements of the country formed in a thumb print.”

QUO Keen has worked in close conjunction with key stakeholders including the MMPRC and other public and private bodies. It carried out extensive research projects in order to craft a new unified identity for the Maldives which goes above and beyond the current image of a luxury honeymoon destination. The final identity will be brought into immediate use.

The extraordinary £320m design boasts 27 holes, is set upon three

An underwater tunnel leads golfers to different islands between shots, as well as to the clubhouse where a glass elevator goes to a main bar which doubles as an aquarium.

The proposed site is just a five-minute speedboat ride from the capital of Male, giving golfers the chance to make quick journeys to the mainland.

Amazingly, the course will even be powered by solar energy which is a resource the Maldives has plenty of – as it’s located just north of the equator.

The idea is the brainchild of Dutch firm Waterstudio who designed the project. It is being engineered by floating architecture specialists Dutch Docklands.

CEO Paul van de Camp said: ‘We told the president of the Maldives we can transform you from climate refugees to climate innovators. ’And we have a way of building and sustaining this project that is environmentally friendly too. This is going to be an exclusively green development in a marine-protected area.

‘This will be the first and only floating golf course in the world – and it comes complete with spectacular ocean views on every hole.’

‘And then there’s the clubhouse. You get in an elevator and go underwater to get to it. It’s like being Captain Nemo down there.’

More than 80 percent of the 1,190 coral reef islands in the Maldives are no more than a meter above sea level.

As sea levels reach dangerous levels, one option for the government is to build defense walls as they have around Male, while another is to live on floating landscapes.

Designer Koen Olthuis said: ‘We’ll be building the islands somewhere else, probably in the Middle East or in India – that way there’s no environmental cost to the Maldives.

‘When it comes to the golf course, the islands will be floated into position first and then the grass will be seeded and the trees planted afterwards.’

Development on the course is expected to begin later this year, and it should be ready for play by the end of 2013 ahead of the full launch in 2015.

The Maldives received more than 65,000 Chinese tourists in the first five months of this year, a 56.7 percent increase over the same period of 2010, according to the latest figures.

Figures from the Maldivian tourism authorities show that the number of Chinese tourists to the Maldives accounted for 16.6 percent of the total foreign tourists from January to May, ranking top of foreign visitors, followed by Italy with 47,900 tourists, Britain, Germany, Turkey and France.

The Maldives, a popular tourist destination for Western tourists, has witnessed a rapidly growing number of Chinese tourists in recent years.

China became the Maldives’ largest tourist market in 2010, generating 120,000 tourists.

In an interview with Xinhua in early May, Mariyam Zulfa, Maldives  minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said the number of Chinese tourists to the Maldives are expected to rise to a new high in 2011.

The Maldives Islands tourism authorities said China’s fast growing economy has made more and more people afford to enjoy overseas holidays.

Other major factors in attracting Chinese tourists include unique sand beaches, visa-free access and a variety of water sports.

The  Maldives tourism department plans to launch non-stop flights between the Maldives and China’s inland cities.

In constant transit nowdays is singer-actress Rachel Alejandro who, over a month after her wedding then went to Maldives for honeymoon.

Alejandro is based in the Philippines while her husband is based in Bangkok as correspondent of a Spanish TV channel.

“It is hard but it has to be this way for awhile,” says Alejandro in an interview with editor and TV host Ricky Lo.

Not that she is the only one adjusting. Alejandro admits in the same interview that she and her husband often compromise in terms of who follows whom, depending on their respective schedules.

This was evident in day one of the marriage she says, when they rescheduled their honeymoon in order to accommodate her work. It was only four days later that they hooked up again for a 10-day stay in Maldives.

Details from the same interview reveal that while in Maldives, the newly-weds spent six days aboard a diving ship and four days in a resort.

“From Maldives, I flew back with him to Bangkok then flew back to Manila for work,” Alejandro adds. Alejandro says her husband flew to Manila for Mother’s Day weekend and stayed for four days.
“I couldn’t leave with him because The SEXY Chef [her business with sister Barni] is formally launching its healthy Diet Programs,” explains Alejandro.

Alejandro plans to stay in Bangkok until next week when her schedule gets tighter because of rehearsals for Atlantis Productions’ “Aida,” in which she works with dad Hajji.

“It’s the first time we are working together since ‘Larawan’ more than 10 years ago,” Alejandro says.

President Mohamed Nasheed has declared Labour Day, observed worldwide on May 1 each year, a public holiday in the Maldives, commencing this year.

The decision comes after the Cabinet recommendation yesterday highlighting the government’s commitment as well as efforts of private parties to protect and promote workers’ rights in the Maldives.

Following the decision, next Sunday, May 1, will be a public holiday in the Maldives.

May 1, International Workers’ Day or Labour Day is a public holiday in many countries.

The Maldives has invited Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton to spend their honeymoon in the Maldives, an up-market tourist destination in the Indian Ocean, after their marriage on April 29.

Maldivian Tourism Minister, Dr. Mariyam Zulfa, said the invitation was sent to the royal couple last week and is pending a reply.

Dr. Zulfa stressed that Prince William, the second-in-line to the British throne, and his fiancée Middleton, were invited to spend their honeymoon in the Maldives because the country has maintained a close relationship with the UK in addition to being a member of the Commonwealth.

“The invitation has been sent to Buckingham Palace. The Maldives sent the invitation as other Commonwealth member countries are also sending such invitations. Moreover, Prince Andrew is a close friend of President Nasheed. We sent the symbolic invitation and it is pending a reply,” she said.

About two billion people worldwide are expected to watch the marriage at Westminster Abbey on April 29.
